Three phrases carry most of a market conversation: Bu ne kadar?, Çok pahalı! and Biraz indirim yapar mısınız? Here is what they mean, roughly how to say them, and where bargaining is normal.
The pronunciations are our own approximations for English speakers.
How much is this?
Bu ne kadar? (boo neh kah-DAR) asks the price of the thing in front of you. It appears in Turkey Travel Planner's shopping lesson and in TurkishClass101's lesson on bargaining, where it starts with afedersiniz, excuse me.
Too expensive!
Çok pahalı! (chok pa-ha-LUH) means "too expensive". It is in the Wikivoyage Turkish phrasebook and in TurkishClass101's bargaining lesson. In the dictionary of the Turkish Language Association (TDK), pahalı is something whose price is high.
Could you give a small discount?
Biraz indirim yapar mısınız? (bee-RAHZ een-dee-REEM yah-PAR muh-suh-NUHZ) is a polite request for a little off the price. The exact form appears in the Kaiwa and Elon.io phrase guides. İndirim is the TDK word for a price reduction.
Where bargaining is normal
Bargaining is common in bazaars and open markets. Turkey Travel Planner, TurkishClass101 and Kaiwa all say so.
In shopping malls and in shops where goods carry price tags, prices are fixed. Turkey Travel Planner, TurkishClass101 and the Chasing the Donkey travel blog all advise against haggling there.
